Lifeloc FC10

The FC10 is a popular breathalyzer model from Lifeloc Technologies, intended specifically for law-enforcement, corrections and professional use. According to the company, procedures have been simplified, with automatic delivery of test results within 10 seconds, 30 seconds or less between tests and full recall of the last test result. Calibration procedures are electronically controlled and can be completed in two minutes or less.

The unit has software that ensures a valid test result or provides clear instructions on how to proceed. A large, graphic, LCD display uses breath flow and alcohol level graphs, standard icons and a 64-character capability to clearly inform the operator of test results, device function, prompts and suggested next steps. AlcoHawk Elite

The AlcoHawk Elite is one of the most advanced breathalyzers from Q3 Innovations, which says features include:

- An electronic airflow sensor to ensure a deep lung sample is obtained. This is a vital new function because only samples of air from the deep lung are proportionate to blood alcohol content.

- An LCD display that has been expanded to four digits. This allows the user to see the final check digit to allow expanded readout monitoring.

- A temperature sensor that displays the temperature at the time of testing. The  AlcoHawk Elite will display "hot" or "cool" in the new blue-lit LCD display to warn if the temperature is outside of the optimal testing range, which ensures enhanced accuracy.

Wired magazine awarded it eight points (out of 10) and wrote:

This handheld drinking game measures who's king of the lushes -- first person to 0.08 wins! Wait ... it's a Breathalyzer? Oh, I see. To test it, I threw back a shot of vodka, blew into the plastic tube, and measured 0.40 -- a level the instruction manual associated with "coma and possible death." As the Alcohawk chirped away its warning of my impending demise, the instructions revealed that the blood-alcohol content reading works accurately only after a 20-minute lull in drinking, eating, or smoking. So I took three (or four ... can't remember) more shots and waited. After 30 minutes, I blew. My score was a 0.07, a level associated with "impairment of balance, speech, vision, and reaction time." Great, now I've got an excuse for being so sloppy. But there's no law against writing drunk, so here I am cranking out a review. What was I saying? Wheee!

Canada's CanWest News Service commented:

A professional-grade alcohol screener that uses a semiconductor oxide sensor, this device detects alcohol content quickly and accurately.

One-touch operation provides answers in seconds.

And, while aesthetics are meaningless on this type of product, it does feature a sleek design. More important, it meets the accuracy requirements of the United States Department of Transportation.

AlcoHawk Pro

The AlcoHawk Pro, from Q3 Innovations, is described as follows:

This model takes a deeper breath sample from subjects and provides more accurate results than similar models.

This model is trusted by many professional organizations for employee screening, emergency room care, and roadside testing. The semiconductor sensor accuracy is ±0.01%BAC at 0.10% BAC and is DOT / NHTSA approved as an alcohol screening device. The AlcoHawk Pro is also 510(k) Certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The AlcoHawk Pro now includes innovative FlowCheck technology. An important aspect of breath testing is ensuring that subjects blow a large volume of air through the tester. FlowCheck will verify that enough air has been blown through the Alcohawk Pro before displaying a test result. If the FlowCheck engages and recognizes that not enough air was blown, an error message will be displayed and a retest should be performed.
